‘(He) looked down at
the chicken leg. He dropped it to the floor quickly, as it was no longer a
chicken leg, but the remains of some dead animal. He saw a long thin tale, like
a bloodied shoe lace entwined between his fingers; a rat. He tossed the tail on
the floor and looked at his hands, which were red with blood. He spat, then
leaned over and was sick on the wooden floor.’
